So Many Names, So Many Uses

A sofa table by any other name
Aside from a few minor differences in features, console and hall tables are basically one in the same. They're so similar that some furniture manufacturers consider the names interchangeable. So what makes a hall table different from a sofa table or console?

Size matters
Sofa tables tend to be a bit lower than hall tables so that they don't exceed the height of the back of your sofa. That extra bit of height that hall tables have (think counter height) makes it convenient and comfortable for you to set down your keys, purse, mail, packages, and other items.
Hall tables are generally narrower than console tables. And that slimmer profile of a hall table makes it ideal for people to maneuver an entryway with ease. Propped flush against a wall, a hall table creates a cozy entryway or foyer and provides handy storage while not taking up too much floor space.

Location, location, location
Just because it's called a sofa table doesn't mean you have to put it behind a sofa. Sofa, console, and hall tables are versatile pieces that can go against a wall or against the back of a couch. They can also be placed between windows, behind a loveseat, or between a pair of accent chairs.

Special features
Console tables typically contain drawers and lower shelves beneath the tabletop for extra storage and display space. Hall tables generally have an open front, which offers easy access to bags, shoes, baskets, and other items stowed under the table. Some console tables have matching mirrors you can hang a few inches above. Combining a console or hall table with a mirror is a great way to make your room seem bigger. The table-and-mirror combo comes in handy for a quick hair and makeup touch-up on your way out the door.
